It wasn’t the Cavalry, but they proved to be a good rescue team.

With Caleb Blackburn out with a broken arm he suffered Wednesday, Flyers coach Greg Bryant turned to Jerrod Laber and Chad Harvey who haven’t pitched in a varsity game all season.

After a shaky start, the Flyers settled down and rallied for a 10-9 win over the Rose Hill (Ky.) Royals Thursday.

“Chad Harvey came in and kept us in the game until we were able to get some runs and get back in the lead,” Bryant said.

“We were out of pitching and we needed those guys to come in and help us out.”

After Rose Hill used two walks, two hit batsmen and an error to score twice in the top of the first inning.

St. Joseph came back to get six runs in the bottom of the inning.

Ryan Schwab singled, stole second base and Chad Harvey was safe on an error as a run score. Ryan Waginger walked and the two runners pulled off a double steal.

Alex Swarts was safe on an error as Harvey scored. Jerrod Laber grounded out as Waginger scored.

Jeremy Addis walked, stole second and came home on a hit by Pat Gagai. Michael Basedow capped the rally with a two-run single.

The Royals got five runs in the second inning to go back in front 7-6 on three walks, a single and a grand slam by Messer.

The Flyers regained the lead with two runs in the fifth.

Laber doubled, stole third and Addis tripled. Gagai laid down a suicide squeeze bunt to score Addis.

St. Joseph pushed the lead to 10-7 in the sixth inning.

Waginger walked, Swarts reached on an error with pinch-runner Reid Smith going to second. Alex Brown grounded out to move the runners up a base and Addis walked to load the bases.

Tommy Nelson was hit by a pitch to force in a run and Basedow walked driving in the final run.

Rose Hill scored twice in the seventh before Schwab was able to close out the win.

St. Joseph, 11-5, travels to New Boston Monday. The Flyers play in the sectional tournament next Thursday against Southeastern at the Ironton High School field.
