COLUMBUS — Eight was enough.
Chesapeake’s Adam Slone, Jeffrey Thornburg, Caleb McComas and Kenny Morgan finished eighth in the 4×400-meter relay Saturday in the finals of the Division III Ohio High School Athletic Association state track meet held at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
The quartet ran a 3:31.53 in Friday’s preliminaries to qualify with the fifth best time overall. They ran a 3:31.96 in the finals.
“Everyone was within a second of each other Friday. We had the same time we did on Friday,” Panthers coach Phil Davis said.
“Our guys did a great job all year. I’m real happy for them. We never knew we’d have this kind of a year in this event, but we got better as the year went on.”
In the boys’ Division II meet Friday, South Point’s 4×400 relay team of Zach Norris, Josh Jones, Aaron Patterson and David Absher ran a 3:36.17 time but failed to reach the finals.
In the girls’ Division III preliminaries Friday, Chesapeake’s Laura Fields ran a 28.30 time but failed to advance to the finals.
South Point’s Ericka Leighty competed in the Division II high jump event Friday but failed to clear the opening height of 4-foot-10.
“It was raining and the surface was slippery and Ericka had a lot of problems trying to keep her footing. The conditions weren’t very good and she’s just a freshman,” Lady Pointers coach Joe Stevens said.
