Religious, secular activities abound during weekend

A number of activities, both secular and religious are scheduled for Easter weekend.

On Friday, Athalia Dillon Chapel will have a Cross Walk through the Village of Athalia at 6:30 p.m. April 14. The walk will begin at the church on 14262 State Route 7, Proctorville.

The Ironton Ministerial Association had its today at noon. This year, St. Paul Lutheran Church hosted the service.

The Rev. Mike Poole, pastor of the church, said the service is meant to bring Irontonians together as a community regardless of where they may worship on Sunday morning.

“There is such a diversity and there is room for everyone. It’s very diverse,” he said. “We have people from the Catholic tradition, Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians, people from non-denominational churches, Baptists, all coming together. Everyone has a place.”

Two area churches will present the movie “The Passion of Christ” on Good Friday. The Hanging Rock Church of the Nazarene will have is showing at 6 p.m. Trinity Assembly of God will present the movie at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, the Harold Haney Annual Pancake Day, sponsored by the Coal Grove Lions Club, will be 7 a.m. – 12 noon at Dawson-Bryant Cafetorium. The annual event raises money for Lions Club projects throughout the year. Not too far away, the Coal Grove Betterment Club will have bake sale at Foodfair grocery store to raise money for the new storage building at the Paul Porter Park. The bake sale will be 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Also on Saturday, the Sanctuary of Grace will sponsor a day of activities at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds. Events for the entire family will begin at 10:30 a.m. An egg hunt featuring more than 20,000 eggs will begin at noon, followed by lunch. Events will continue until 2 p.m.

The Lawrence County Historical Museum will have its annual Easter egg hunt on the museum front lawn.

“I’m looking forward to it,” historical society member Robert Price said. “I imagine we’ll have around 50 or 75 kids, maybe more. We sent notes home to the kids in the schools so I think that will help.”

Price said 400 eggs will be hidden. The Easter egg hunt will be 1-4 p.m.

At 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ironton will have an Easter vigil.

On Easter Sunday, there will be a plethora of sunrise services celebrating the holiest day of the Christian calendar. Most if not all of these special services are in addition to other regular church services. Freedom Enterprise Independent Baptist Church will have its sunrise service at 6 a.m., as will Jeffersonville Missionary Baptist Church, LaGrange Freewill Baptist Church, Sugar Creek Missionary Baptist Church and Union Baptist Church.

Athalia Dillon Chapel will have its sunrise service at 6:30 a.m., as will Decatur Missionary Baptist Church, Linnville United Baptist Church, Zoar Baptist Church, Trinity Freewill Baptist Church, Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church and Oakland Chapel Church.

Gateway Baptist Church will have Easter Sunrise service at 7 a.m. as will New Zion Church.

Mamre Baptist Church will present its Easter Cantata, “The Cross,” at 7 p.m. Friday and Sunday.
