PEDRO — The Twin Towers blocked off the Empire State Building.
Rock Hill’s 5-foot-11 Mandi McKenzie and 5-9 Michelle Pancake combined for 24 points and limited Chesapeake’s 6-4 Sarah Rucker to 10 points as the Redwomen posted a 45-31 win over the Lady Panthers Monday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
“We changed some things up on defense and worked to stop Rucker. Mandi and Michelle held her to 10 points. We were able to do what we wanted defensively,” Rock Hill coach Matt Fulks said.
Pancake led the Redwomen with 14 points and McKenzie scored 10.
Tasha England added nine points for the Lady Panthers (3-7, 1-4).
“Rucker has the best set of hands on a girl I’ve seen. They had some girls step up and hit some shots late. They’ve improved quite a bit,” Fulks said.
Fulks said the play of other players proved to be just as pivotal as the job by Pancake and McKenzie.
“Kelsey Harris has played well the last three games. That’s nice to have coming off the bench. Bobbi Harper didn’t have a lot of points but she did a nice job on defense,” Fulks said.
Pancake had six points and McKenzie four in the first quarter as Rock Hill took a comfortable 15-4 lead.
Harris came off the bench to get four points in the second quarter to help offset six points by Rucker and it was 24-19 at the break.
McKenzie scored six more points in the third quarter as Rock Hill pulled away to a 38-23 lead.
