Coal Grove coach John Jones made a “Wise” decision.

Jones decided to go with his ace Wednesday and it paid off as Randy Wise pitched a one-hitter to lead the Hornets to a 12-0 win over the St. Joseph Flyers.

“He’s pitched the tough games all year. He pitched pretty well. He was throwing better tonight than he has all year. He was keeping the ball down, he was throwing harder and his curveball was breaking well,” Hornets coach John Jones said.

Wise struck out nine and walked one as he faced just 17 batters. He had a stretch of six straight strikeouts.

Ryan Waginger doubled in the first inning for the only St. Joseph hit.

Wise gave the Hornets the lead early as he walked and came around to score after a balk and a one-out single by Alex Johnson in the first inning.

Coal Grove scored four runs in the second inning.

Taylor Dean was safe on an error, Shannon Goodwin singled and Andrew Christian put down a sacrifice bunt.

Wise singled home the first run, Zach Murphy, Johnson and Eric Davidson all walked to force in two runs and Bryan Bryant capped the rally with an RBI single.

The Hornets got four more runs in the third inning.

Goodwin and Christian singled and Murphy hit a three-run homer. Johnson, Davidson and Bryant followed with walks to load the bases and Dean hit into a fielder’s choice as the run scored.

Coal Grove pushed across the final three runs in the fourth inning.

Goodwin homered to start the inning. Wise and Murphy then singled, moved up on a passed ball and Smith delivered a two-run single.

On Thursday, Coal Grove, 6-9, travels to River Valley for an Ohio Valley Conference game while St. Joseph, 10-5, hosts Rose Hill, Ky.
