Two Rock Hill High School graduates are getting help paying for their college education, thanks to the Lawrence Lodge 198 F&AM.

Lodge members have awarded Kendra Friend and Mark DeWitt $250 scholarships. Lodge secretary Walt Butler said the scholarships are one of many public outreach projects the organization undertakes, many of them education-oriented.

“This is one of the things we do in the community,” Butler said. “We also support special Olympics and fingerprinting for children. We participate in the Memorial Day Parade and we donate hats and gloves and scarves to the children at West Ironton (Elementary School). That’s something we do every year.”

Friend is the daughter of Darrell Friend and Virginia Friend. She plans to major in criminal justice at Ohio University Southern.

“I would like to be a probation officer,” she said.

DeWitt is the son of Johnny DeWitt and Gloria DeWitt and will attend Shawnee State University, where he will pursue either a career in education or journalism.

The lodge presents scholarships annually to two area high school students.
