Winning top dairy goat showmanship honors was a simple equation: Maddy behaved so Kayla Skaggs won.

The 15-year-old Ironton area teen took home the showmanship honors and a few other awards in the senior dairy goat competition Friday, in part because her goat was on her best behavior.

“Maddy is a big baby. She acted pretty good today,” Kayla said. “She kind of got restless at the end but that is to be expected for a goat.”

After some near misses in past years, Kayla said she liked the way it felt to walk away with the top honors.

“It felt pretty good,” she said. “This is my first time getting a showmanship award. It feels good.”

What is it that draws Kayla to goats? It is their personality, of course.

“Goats are easy to handle and easy to work with,” she said. “They are not really that hard to take care of. They like attention.”

Every contestant won at least one of the 13 categories. Other contestants in the competition were Kaitlin Huddle, Erin Adkins, Amanda McArthur and Jessica Keathley.
