Fairland Junior League splits games in state tourney
ASHTABULA — It’s a tale of two days.
After rolling to a 10-3 win over New Miami on Sunday, the Fairland Junior League All-Star fell 10-0 to Youngstown Boardman in the second round of the state tournament on Monday.
“We were two different teams on two different days,” Fairland manager John Bond said.
“In the first game, Travis (Zimmerman) threw the ball well and we scored five runs in the first inning that got us started.”
Catcher Zack Canaday threw out four runners in the win over New Miami. He had another against Boardman.
Fairland jumped in front 5-0 in the bottom of the first inning.
Matt Bloomfield singled and Chad Fisher doubled for the first run. Tyler Duty, Zimmerman, Canaday and Wes Lezu all reached on errors for four runs. A throwing error allowed Lezu to come home.
The lead went to 6-0 in the fourth inning when Bloomfield reached on an error and Fisher singled.
After New Miami got a run in the fifth inning, Fairland came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Zimmeman singled, Canaday walked, Lezu singled, John Holbrook wlaked and Kyle Taubenheim singled.
The final two Fairland runs scored in the sixth inning when Duty walked, Zimmerman singled, Canaday walked and Lezu and Colton Lindsey both grounded out as to drive in runs.
Fairland had seven hits and Boardman eight in the second game, but Fairland was unable to bunch anything together.
“They scored eight of their 10 runs with two outs. And we had some errors that gave them extra outs,” Bond said. “We made errors at the wrong time and we didn’t get the hit when we needed it.”
Fairland plays Bucyrus at 5 p.m. today as the tournament continues.
