WILLOW WOOD — Two big plays and two big mistakes were just too much for the Symmes Valley Vikings.

The Vikings were guilty of crucial mistakes and Trimble gained 124 of its 238 rushing yards on two plays as the Tomcats beat Symmes Valley 33-20 Friday.

“We’re just too young to know how to win yet. We’re just going through our growing pains,” Vikings coach Rusty Webb said.

“I’m not trying to take anything away from Trimble because they played well, but we basically gave the game to them.”

Symmes Valley had 267 yards of offense and 18 first downs.

Trimble got on the scoreboard first when Isaac Standley hit Mark Christman with a 13-yard scoring pass and it was 6-0.

Symmes Valley tied the game on a 16-yard run by Chris Capper with 6:42 left in the half.

With the aid of an offside penalty against the Vikings on fourth-and-4 to keep its drive alive, Trimble took the lead on a 1-yard run by Standley with just 13 seconds left in the half.

The Vikings had a 16-play, 63-yard drive in the third quarter that stalled because of a false start on fourth-and-one.

The Tomcats responded with Blake Fouts going 77 yards for a touchdown and 20-6 lead.

A blocked punt was recovered by Trimble in the end zone for a touchdown with 22 seconds on the clock and now it was 26-6.

The Vikings (1-3) refused to die as they came back to score on a 1-yard run by Capper and it was 26-13.

Recovering the ensuing onside kickoff, the Vikings got within 26-20 on a 6-yard run by Kirt Shipley.

“We never quit,” Webb said.

But Trimble sealed the win with a long drive capped by Scott Bycofski’s 47-yard run with 2:18 left.

Shipley finished with 106 yards rushing on 26 carries. Capper ran for 42 yards and threw for another 67.
