Fairland can#8217;t find its footing in muddy loss to Winfield, 19-0
PROCTORVILLE — The rain kind of muddied the Fairland Dragons plans.
Fairland struggled with its running game in
the mud and became one-dimensional in a 19-0 loss to the Winfield (W.Va.) Generals Friday night.
“We couldn’t do anything. The field was the major factor,” Fairland coach Brent Wilcoxon said.
Fairland have seven turnovers including five fumbles. The Dragons drove to the 1-yard line and 11-yard line in the first quarter but turned the ball over on fumbles each time.
The Dragons (0-2) managed just 29 yards rushing on 25 attempts. Quarterback Cole Hatfield became the main offensive option and he was 9 of 27 for 159 yards and two interceptions.
Jacob Lucas caught four passes for 75 yards to lead Fairland’s receiving corps.
The ground-oriented Generals rushed for 158 yards and threw for 76.
“Our defense was better. They did their part,” Wilcoxon said.
After a scoreless first quarter, Winfield used a Fairland turnover to get on the scoreboard.
Taking over at the 17-yard line, Jonathan Smoot hit Steven Gaydosz with a 12-yard scoring pass four plays later and it was 6-0.
The Generals didn’t score again until the final play of the third quarter when Smoot ran 3 yards for a score to cape a short 35-yard, 9-play drive thanks to another turnover.
Winfield (1-1) drove 55 yards in five plays for its final score with 6:55 to play as Gaydosz ran 10 yards into the end zone. Zach Markham kicked the extra point.
