Ferguson named Classic all-tourney

RIO GRANDE — Having a healthy Candace Ferguson has been good for the health of the University of Rio Grande Redwomen.

Coming off a injury that sidelined her as a junior, the 6-foot senior center has been making up for lost time.

Ferguson gave a strong performance in the annual Bevo Francis Classic and earned all-tournament honors.

In the semifinals on Friday, Ferguson had 12 points and five rebounds as Rio Grande beat Wilberforce 72-64.

The Redwomen were faced with a major task in the title game on Saturday as they went against Trevecca Nazarence which is ranked No. 20 in the NAIA Division I.

Ferguson had 14 points but Rio Grande fell short in its upset bid, 68-62.

Ferguson was joined on the all-tournament team by URG’s sophomore forward Sarah Drabinski.

Rio Grande, 2-2, hosts Pikeville (Ky.) College at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Stretch Internet will have the play-by-play coverage beginning at 5:35 p.m.
