OAK HILL — For three quarters, the Coal Grove Lady Hornets played the Oak Hill Lady Oaks dead even.

Unfortunately, there are four quarters in a basketball game.

After taking a one-point halftime lead, Coal Grove struggled with its offense in the third quarter and Oak Hill took advantage en route to a 53-42 win Monday.

“We had the opportunity. We came out and made shots in the firt half, but in the third quarter those same shots would rim out,” Lady Hornets coach Nick Miller said.

“We have a chance to win. We just couldn’t make anything in one quarter.”

Chelsea Markins scored 14 points including four 3-pointers to lead Coal Grove. Samantha Hall added 11 points.

Lacey Adkins led the Lady Oaks (1-0) with 18 points.

Hall and Markins scored 6 points each in the first quarter and the game was tied 15-15.

The Lady Hornets outscored the Oaks 9-8 in the second quarter to lead 24-23 at the half.

But Coal Grove scored only 4 points in the third quarter as Oak Hill pulled ahead 38-28.

Taylor Sexton scored 6 points and Hall added 5 more in the fourth quarter, but Adkins had 7 points to preserve the win.

“We came back and made a run in the fourth quarter, but it was tough to come back against a good team like Oak Hill,” Miller said.

Coal Grove (1-1) plays at South Point Dec. 7.
