BAINBRIDGE — If they could just erase the first half.
A slow start was too much for the South Point Lady Pointers to overcome as they fell 52-43 Saturday in the season opener.
“We just made a lot of mistakes early and we missed a lot of free throws,” Lady Pointers Coach Dave Adams said. “We’ll be a lot better as the season goes along. We’re just so young and inexperienced.”
Missy Wheeler scored 12 points while T’Ann Mayo had 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Paint Valley took a 15-8 lead at the end of the first quarter as Whitney Hollon and Bree Kavauff scored 4 points each. Wheeler had 4 points for South Point.
Wheeler had 5 more points in the second quarter but the Lady Pointers trailed 26-16 at the break.
Paint Valley pulled away to an 18-point lead midway as Chelsea Wright hit a pair of 3-pointers and Maggie Cooper scored 4 points.
But South Point cut the deficit to 11 as Mayo hit a 3-pointer and Tinesha Taylor scored 6 of her 9 points.
Mayo got 7 more points in the fourth quarter but the Lady Bearcats converted 7 of 10 from the line down the stretch to seal the win.
The Lady Pointers visit Portsmouth today and host Greenup County, Ky., Thursday.
