SOUTH POINT — So far this season, there’s been no place like home for the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers. In fact, there’s been no place but home.

All five of Ironton’s games have been at home, at least until Monday when Ironton visited the South Point Lady Pointers.

As it turned out, South Point’s gym turned out to be a home away from home as Ironton’s defensive pressure sparked a 66-37 win over the Lady Pointers.

“It was nice to go on the road and get a win,” Ironton coach Doug Graham said. “I know the score doesn’t say it, but South Point has a nice team. They have good athletes. We had to play well to win.”

Ironton (5-1) played well on both ends of the court. Offensively, the Lady Fighting Tigers were 23 of 54 from the field and were led by Jessica Waddle with 23 points including four 3-pointers and Mandi Boykin who had 17 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists and 5 steals.

The defense force 20 turnovers while Ironton committed only eight. The Lady Fighting Tigers also held a 37-26 rebound advantage.

“We did a nice job on offense, but I thought we played well defensively. We put a lot of pressure on them and we didn’t even do it with our press. We just played it straight up,” Graham said.

South Point (6-3) struggled with its shooting as they made 14 of 39 shots for 39 percent.

Ericka Leighty and Tinesha Taylor had 9 points each for the Lady Pointers.

Ironton jumped out to a 10-1 lead before South Point got within 16-9 on a baseline shot by Vanessa Rogers. Boykin then made three foul shots to close the quarter and it was 19-9.

A basket by Leighty had South Point down 24-15 with five minutes left in the half. But Waddle scored Ironton’s next 10 points and Kayla Wileman converted a 3-point play at the 1:29 mark and suddenly Ironton led 39-17.

A 3-pointer from the corner by Waddle just before the buzzer opened up a 42-20 halftime cushion.

Ironton’s lead was 53-33 at the end of the third quarter. The final score proved to be the Lady Fighting Tigers biggest lead of the game.
