COAL GROVE — Chelsea Markins isn’t Wonder Woman, but she left the Chesapeake Lady Panthers wondering just how to stop her.
Markins scored 38 points — 26 in the second half — as the Coal Grove Lady Hornets beat Chesapeake 60-50 Thursday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
With 6-foot center Samantha Hall in foul trouble, Markins took control to help offset Chesapeake’s 6-3 high-scoring center Sarah Rucker who finished with 28 points.
“Chelsea just took over. She realized she had to do it,” Lady Hornets coach Nick Miller said. “She took the ball to the hole and challenged Rucker. She got a few shots blocked, but she kept going in there.”
Hall and Markins combined for all of Coal Grove’s points in the first quarter as the Lady Hornets took a 10-8 lead.
But Chesapeake came back to take a 21-18 halftime lead despite Markins scoring 7 of the 8 points in the quarter.
With Markins getting 11 points in the third quarter, Coal Grove rallied to take a 37-31 lead.
Rucker got hot and scored 14 points in the fourth quarter as Chesapeake tried to rally.
However, Markins scored 15 points including 9 of 12 at the foul line.
Although Rucker had 28 points, Miller praised the defensive work of Brittany Harrison.
“Brittany Harrison played really well defensively. She gave up six inches to Rucker and battled her all night,” Miller said.
“The first three quarters we did a pretty good job on Rucker and then she hit a bunch of foul shots at the end. The big thing is we fairly-well contained the rest of the team.”
Hall finished with 12 points despite fouling out for the Lady Hornets who are now 5-2 and 2-1 in the OVC.
Lexy Staton added 9 points for Chesapeake (4-4, 1-2).
