Redwomen shake up Blue Angels

PEDRO — Matt Fulks is no Jerry Lee Lewis. You probably won’t even hear him singin’ “Whole Lot of Shakin’ Going On.”

But the Rock Hill coach shook things up Monday and the Redwomen shook off the Gallipolis Blue Angels 48-46 in a non-league game.

Trailing by 4 points at halftime, Fulks made some changes and the Redwomen responded with a strong second half to get their second win in five games.

“We changed the lineup a little in the second half that allowed us to match up better,” Fulks said. “We had some kids step up tonight and they just battled.”

One of the players who stepped up was Brooke Long who scored 13 of her points in the third quarter when Rock Hill rallied to take a 40-32 lead.

“Brooke didn’t feel good and she stepped it up and carried us in the third quarter. She’s capable of that. I’m proud of her,” Fulks said.

Alexis Geiger got 5 points in the first quarter as Gallipolis took an 11-9 lead.

The Blue Angels extended the lead to 23-19 at the half, but then came the big third quarter turnaround.

A shot by Long from the lane had Rock Hill up 47-46, but the Redwomen then missed two foul shots to give Gallipolis new life.

Gallipolis missed a shot with eight seconds left and Long got the rebound but was hurt on the play. Gretchen Dickess shot the free throws and made one to put the Redwomen up 48-46.

A final attempt by the Blue Angels Brittany Elliott with one second left was off the mark.

“That’s the first time we lost the lead late, but we did what we had to do to get the job done,” Fulks said.

“We got our usual points from Bobbi (Harper) and Anna (Bridges) on the boards, and (Elisha) Daniels gave us some big minutes in the second half. I was a good all-around effort from everyone.”

Long finished with 20 points, Harper scored 11 and Bridges 9.

Elliott scored 17 and Geiger 13 for Gallipolis.
