COAL GROVE — The South Point Pointers removed the welcome mat and refused to let anyone inside.

Shutting down Coal Grove’s inside tandem of Adam Bare and Tyler Branch, the Pointers beat the Hornets 67-41 Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“We focused on their big kids. We knew they had been doing most of their scoring and we did a pretty good job on them,” Pointers coach Gary Norris said.

Bare scored 13 points but managed only 7 shots. Branch was held scoreless.

“South Point did a nice job pressuring us and keeping us from getting the ball into the post,” Hornets coach Mike Waller said.

Chris Brown had 17 points and Chase McWhorter 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Pointers who remained tied for first place in the OVC at 2-0. They are 5-2 overall.

Aaron Craft and Corey Taylor had 6 rebounds each and Beau Weed handed out 5 assists.

Coal Grove fell to 0-7 and 0-2.

The game started slowly with the Pointers up 11-5. Brown then took over and scored 12 points in the second quarter and the defense held the Hornets to 9 points as South Point built a 33-14 halftime cushion.

“The first half we played reasonably well and we shot the ball pretty well,” Norris said.

The Pointers continued to pull away in the third quarter as they opened up a 52-22 lead.

Austin Willis had 5 points in the fourth quarter as the Hornets outscored the Pointers 19-15.
