PROCTORVILLE — Tough times don’t seem to bother the Coal Grove Lady Hornets.

Falling behind early in a tough Ohio Valley Conference road game, the Lady Hornets battled back en route to a 68-60 win over the Fairland Lady Dragons Thursday.

“We did a nice job battling back after we got behind to start the game,” Lady Hornets coach Nick Miller said. “The girls showed a lot of poise. They battled through a lot of tough situations on the road.”

Fairland opened the game with a 10-0 run with Megan Auxier scoring 7 points including a 3-pointer.

But Coal Grove went on a 13-0 run to end the quarter with Jordyn Cox hitting two shots from behind the arc to give the Lady Hornets a 14-11 lead.

“We had some pretty good balance. Jordyn Cox had a good first half for us. She hit a couple of 3s in the first quarter when we needed them,” Miller said.

Samantha Hall scored 6 points and Chelsea Markins and Brittany Harrison combined for 11 points as Coal Grove held onto its 29-26 lead at the break.

Emily McMaster scored 8 of Fairland’s 15 points in the quarter.

Cox hit two more 3-pointers in the third quarter and seven different players scored as Coal Grove pulled away to a 51-37 lead.

Markins had 9 points including 6 at the foul line as Coal Grove led 68-57. MacKenzie Rucker hit a long 3-pointer at the buzzer for Fairland to set the final score.

Markins led Coal Grove (2-2, 1-1) with 19 points and 8 rebounds. Hall and Harrison scored 12 points each.

Auxier led Fairland (2-4, 0-2) with 16 points while Shea Berry, Molly Bumgarder and McMaster getting 10 each.
