LUCASVILLE — The South Point Lady Pointers don’t mean to seem greedy, but they like going back for seconds.
Second quarters, that is.
Another strong second quarter triggered the Lady Pointers 59-41 win over the Portsmouth Trojans Monday in the Division III sectional tournament.
“We had another big second quarter. We used our press and got some baskets in transition,” said Lady Pointers coach Dave Adams.
Seven different players scored including Missy Wheeler with 6 points as South Point took a 17-12 lead in the first quarter. Jennifer Bendolph had 9 of the Lady Trojans points.
Sarah Lee scored 8 points while Caymie Collier and Wheeler had 5 each as South Point exploded in the second quarter to outscore Portsmouth 23-5 and grab a 40-17 lead.
“We spread it around pretty good on offense,” said Adams. “Collier and Wheeler got a lot of their points out of transition.”
Maggee Colley and Sidney Jordan combined for 10 points as Portsmouth cut the spread to 48-32, but Collier had 4 points in the fourth quarter as South Point coasted to the win.
Lee led South Point with 15 points. Wheeler had 11 points and Collier scored 9.
Bendolph led all scorers with 20 points for Portsmouth (2-18).
South Point (15-6) will play at 2:45 p.m. Saturday against Wheelersburg in the sectional finals. Wheelersburg advanced with a 58-43 win over North Adams.
