WILLOW WOOD — Some of the main attractions were missing, but the entertainment was worth the price of admission.

Symmes Valley’s leading scorer Michael Humphrey missed the game with a possible broken jaw and could be lost for the season. Green was missing two starters due to disciplinary reasons.

Despite the missing starters, Symmes Valley used a big third quarter to win a 61-57 thriller over the Green Bobcats Friday in a Southern Ohio Conference game.

Symmes Valley is now 13-3 on the season and remains second in the league at 10-2.

“We spent the whole first half trying to adjust to not having Michael,” Vikings coach Alvin Carpenter said. “We did a lot better in the second half.”

Coach Mike Hopper was pleased with the effort of his young team in the wake of adversity.

“The young ones stepped up in a tough situation,” Hopper said.

Matt Clarke got a starting nod and scored 7 points and Randy Ratcliff 6 in the first quarter as Green took an 18-13 lead. Kirt Shipley had all of the Vikings points in the quarter including three trifectas.

The Bobcats were up 28-22 at the half, but Kyle Meadows scored 11 points in the third quarter as Symmes Valley stormed back to take a 41-37 lead.

Nathan Patten scored 8 points and Clarke had 7 in the fourth quarter only to have Meadows scored 7 points of his own as the Vikings held on for the win.

Meadows led the Vikings with 18 points - all in the second half - and had 10 rebounds. Shipley finished with 17 points while Chris Capper grabbed 10 rebounds and had 6 steals. Jacob Johnson had 5 assists.

Patten led Green (6-11, 4-8) with 19 points and Clarke scored 18. Chris Willard and Corey Dyer pulled down 7 rebounds each.
