WILLOW WOOD — Symmes Valley coach Alvin Carpenter has been down with the flu the past few days, but he admits there have been times when he has felt worse.

Like Friday night.

The Vikings shot just 39.6 percent from the field as they lost 74-49 to the Eastern Eagles, thus ending their hopes of a Southern Ohio Conference championship.

The poor shooting coupled with Eastern’s rebounding advantage left the Vikings 13-5 on the season and 10-3 in the SOC, two games off the pace with only a Tuesday game at Portsmouth Clay remaining.

“We didn’t shoot well and they hurt us on the boards,” Carpenter said. “They shot the ball well from the outside, and if they missed they got the rebound.”

Eastern held a 37-24 rebound advantage and had 11 offensive rebounds in the first half to the Vikings overall total of 10.

Aaron Polland scored 8 points in the first quarter as Eastern took an 18-12 lead. Kyle Meadows had half of the Vikings points.

Ian Bapst scored all 9 of his points in the second quarter to offset 7 points by Symmes Valley’s Chris Capper as the lead went to 39-28 at the break.

Meadows scored 8 more points in the third quarter but John Slone drained three 3-pointers to open the half and the Eagles pulled away to a 58-42 lead.

Symmes Valley managed just 7 points in the fourth quarter while Polland had 8 for the Eagles.

Meadows had 14 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocked shots for the Vikings. Kirt Shipley added 11 points.

Polland scored 20 points to lead four Eagles (11-8, 11-2) in double figures. Slone had 16, Brian Osborne 14 and A.J. Osborne 13.

The Vikings were playing their third straight game without leading scorer Michael Humphrey who is out for the season with a broken jaw.
