Early cold shooting downfall for Panthers in loss to Raiders

CHESHIRE — Somebody take that lid off the basket.
The Chesapeake Panthers couldn’t get a shot to drop for more than five minutes and eventually lost 69-60 to the River Valley Raiders Tuesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
The Panthers were just 1 of 12 from the field in the first quarter and didn’t score until the 5:02 mark in falling behind 10-0. The Raiders built a 15-4 lead by the end of the quarter.
Chesapeake cut the deficit to 24-17 at the break before the Raiders outscored the Panthers 20-16 in the third quarter to go on top 44-33.
The Panthers finished the game 23 of 49 from the field for 46.9 percent or 59.5 percent after the first quarter.
Mike Stapleton had 19 points and 3 steals to lead the Panthers (5-11, 1-6). Kyle Rase scored 14 points and Kyle Webb added 10 points. Jonathan Greene and Travis Zimmerman had 6 rebounds each.
River Valley (9-7, 4-3) had three players in double figures with Bryan Morrow scoring 15, Michael Cordell 12 and Ryan Eggleton 11.
