Fairview holds off stubborn Coal Grove, 74-62

WESTWOOD, Ky. — In rivalries you throw the records out the window. Well, the same can be said for the Coal Grove Hornets in every game.

Despite no wins this season, the Hornets have given an all-out effort each game including Saturday’s 74-62 loss at the hands of the Fairview Eagles.

“Fairview is one of the better teams we’ve played this year. We gave up 22 points in the first quarter and then played them pretty even the rest of way. The kids are still battling and showing a desire to win a game,” Waller said.

The Hornets latest effort was highlighted by Austin Willis who hit five 3-pointers as he scored 19 points, and Adam Bare with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Zach Murphy had a solid game with 9 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals. Simon Hall blocked four shots.

“Austin really shot the ball well from the floor. Adam Bare had another big game, Zach Murphy had a good floor game and Simon Hall played really well,” Waller said.

Cameron Hall had 19 points while Alex Barber, Daniel Armstrong and Caleb Collins scored 15 each for Fairview (9-10).

The Eagles used 6 points each by Barber, Hall and Collins to jump in front 22-11 at the end of the first quarter.

Willis got a hot hand in the second quarter with 11 points as he drained three trifectas and Tyler Branch scored 5 of his points as Coal Grove cut the deficit to 40-31.

Cameron Hall, who hit a pair of treys in the first quarter, had another 3-pointer and scored 5 points for the Eagles.

Bare scored 7 points as each team scored 15 points in the third quarter and it was 55-46.

Willis hit two more 3-pointers in the fourth quarter but Armstrong scored 7 of his points as Fairview prevented any comeback attempt.
