St. Joseph used a solid third quarter to rally and beat the Lucasville Valley Indians 53-46 Saturday.

“It was a physical game and we battled. We played a bad second quarter and came out and played well and pulled out the win. It’s nice to do that before going into the tournament,” Flyers coach Kevin Hacker said.

Chad Harvey scored 6 points and Ryan Staton 4 in the first quarter as St. Joseph took a 17-14 lead.

But the offense struggled in the second quarter and Valley was able to go in front 27-22 at the break.

Harvey and Staton combined for 10 points again in the third quarter and the defense held the Indians to 6 points as St. Joseph took a 36-33 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Michael Basedow and Harvey had 4 points each and the Flyers were 7 of 10 from the foul line down the stretch as they clinched the win.

Harvey finished with 16 points and 7 rebounds. Basedow had 11 points and 4 blocked shots while Staton had 12 points and 6 rebounds.

Zach Call led Valley with 14 points.

Against Wayne, the Flyers were 4 of 20 from the 3-point line.

Harvey had 17 points and Basdow 10 to pace the Flyers. Neal Dillon led Wayne with 19 points.

The Flyers host Portsmouth East Tuesday.
