Herd to face UAB as tourney opens

It’s all or nothing for the Marshall Thundering Herd.

Marshall’s hopes of playing in the postseason rest solely on winning the Conference USA tournament that tips off Wednesday.

The Herd is only 12-18 on the season and finished 9-7 in C-USA, so there is absolutely no chance of an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament or an invitation to the NIT.

Marshall faces Alabama-Birmingham at 6 p.m.

Wednesday. While the Herd is expected to beat UAB, next up would be a 6 p.m. game on Thursday against C-USA regular season champion and No. 6-ranked Memphis on their home court at FedExForum.

Rice and UTEP tip-off Wednesday’s games at noon followed by Southern Mississippi and Southern Methodist at 2:30 p.m. Marshall and UAB play next and the nightcap has Tulsa facing East Carolina at 8:30 p.m.

Thursday’s schedule has Central Florida against the Rice-UTEP winner at noon followed by Houston and the USM-SMU winner at 2:30, Memphis and the Marshall-UAB winner at 6 p.m. and Tulane against the Tulsa-ECU winner a 8:30 p.m.

The semifinals are at 3:30 and 6 p.m. on Friday with the championship game at 10:35 a.m. Saturday on CBS.
