Hot-shooting Titans rally by Flyers 57-51

Maybe for the next game, the St. Joseph Flyers better pack an air inflator along with their other equipment.

The Flyers played on an emotional rollercoaster Tuesday in a 57-51 loss to the hot-shooting Portsmouth Notre Dame Titans.

“We were flat. We didn’t play well except in spurts,” Flyers coach Kevin Hacker said. “We’d get going and then we would have two or three turnovers and we’d go flat again.”

While the Flyers offense was flat, the Titans’ shooting was sky-high.

Notre Dame was only 2 of 9 from the field in the first quarter, then made 17 of 29 the rest of the game including 7 of 11 from the 3-point line. The Titans were 6 of 10 from behind the arc in the second half.

“We didn’t play well and they shot the lights out,” Hacker said.

Michael Basedow was the only Flyers player who was able to get his offense in gear. Basedow had 21 points — 15 in the second half.

Alex Davis was an example of the hot shooting for the Titans (2-5). Davis had 21 points as he made 6 of 6 shots from the field, 3 of 3 from behind the arc and 6 of 6 from the foul line.

Mike Mullins added 13 pints and Kevin Delabar 12.

Down 5-4, the Flyers got layups by Chad Harvey and Caleb Blackburn and Ryan Schwab hit a 3-pointer with 28 seconds on the clock and the lead was 11-5.

Basedow and Clay Crum had layups to end the half as the FLYers built a 22-15 halftime lead.

Davis hit a 15-footer to begin the second half, then banked in a 3-pointer from the top of the key and the Titans were within 22-20.

Leading 26-25, Ryan Staton made a foul shot, Schwab blocked a shot and Chad Harvey grabbed the ball and raced the length of the floor for a layup.

Harvey’s steal and layup put the lead at 31-25.

But a 3-pointer by center Mike Mullins got Notre Dame within 37-35 at the end of the quarter.

The lead changed hands four times early in the fourth quarter until Aaron Noel hit a short jumper and Delabar drained a 3-pointer to make it 47-43 with 3:13 to play.

A trey by Basedow with 1:03 left got the Flyers as close as 49-48, but the Titans were 8 of 8 from the line over the final 32 seconds with Davis going 6 of 6.
