Redmen take away SJ#8217;s driving license

PEDRO — One thing a 16-year-old never wants is to have his or her driving privileges taken away.

Although automobiles weren’t involved, the Rock Hill Redmen temporarily suspended the St. Joseph Flyers’ driver’s licenses as they took a 66-43 win Tuesday night.

The Flyers guard tandem of Michael Basedow and Chad Harvey caused the Redmen problems not only in an early season win but in the first quarter Tuesday.

Harvey had a6 points in the first quarter as St. Joseph took a 15-13 lead.

But that changed in the second quarter as Rock Hill took away the drive and seven different players scored as the Redmen rallied to take a 33-21 lead and were never headed.

“When we found a way to contain Harvey and Basedow,” Rock Hill coach Adam Simpson said. “If Harvey wasn’t scoring, he was getting the ball to (Ryan) Staton.

“We found a way to stop him from driving to the basket. We knew they’d try to spread the floor and try to drive to the basket and early on they were beating us to the basket.”

Mike Ison scored 7 points in the first quarter and Matt Matney hit a 3-pointer in the first quarter to keep the Redmen close.

Nathan Davenport and Aaron Butler combined for 9 of Rock Hill’s 20 points in the second quarter.

Wes Pierson came off the bench to score 5 points and Ison added a 3-pointers in the third quarter as Rock Hill extended its lead to 45-29. Harvey scored 6 of St. Joseph’s 8 points.

Stumbo and Davenport had 6 points each in the fourth quarter to offset 5 points by Harvey and 4 by Jerrod Laber as Rock Hill outscored the Flyers 21-14.

Ison and Davenport scored 12 points each to lead a balanced Rock Hill offense. Andrew Stumbo and Pierson both scored 11 points.

Stumbo and Davenport each had a double-double with 11 and 10 rebounds, respectively. Mark DePriest handed out 6 assists and Stumbo had 3 steals.

Harvey led the Flyers (8-6) with 17 points with Staton scoring 11. Basedow had 6 of his 9 points in the first half.

The win was the sixth straight for the Redmen (8-5).
