When the chips were down, Amy Layne and Bobbi Harper stepped up.

Trailing early in the fourth quarter, Layne and Harper hits some key shots as the Rock Hill Redwomen went on to beat the St. Joseph Female Flyers 55-39 Thursday in a non-league game.

“Amy Layne stepped up and hit a couple of big shots. Bobbi stepped up at the end and took control. We got scoring from 10 people so we had pretty good balance,” said Redwomen coach Matt Fulks. “One thing we did in the fourth quarter was hit our layups.”

St. Joseph coach B.J. Hannon said his team played well but was hurt by the loss of point guard Lindsay Dressel in the fourth quarter due to an illness.

“We played well. We made some mistakes, but that’s normal. I’m proud of them,” Hannon said. “We played well in the second and third quarters. When Lindsay went down, that really hurt us.”

Brooke Long had 4 points in the first quarter as Rock Hill took a 14-7 lead.

Katie Schwab scored 5 points in the second quarter to offset 4 points by Rock Hill’s Sara Hartwig as St. Joseph got within 25-20 at the half.

“We didn’t have much intensity and we missed a lot of layups. We just didn’t play very well,” Fulks said. “But I give St. Joe a lot of credit. They played well.”

Dressel scored 7 points in the third quarter to get the Female Flyers within 35-34 although Harper had 5 points to keep Rock Hill ahead.

St. Joseph took a one-point lead early in the fourth quarter before Anna Bridges had 5 points and the Redwomen (5-7) outscored the Female Flyers 20-5.

Harper led all scorers with 13 points as 10 different Redwomen scored.

Dressel top St. Joseph (3-7) with 11 points.
