SANDY HOOK, Ky. — The name Blackburn said it all. He burned the Elliott County bats black.

Cody Blackburn gave a dominating performance Tuesday as he threw a five-inning no-hitter at the Elliott County Lions as the St. Joseph Flyers rolled to a 12-0 win.

Blackburn struck out 11 and one of the other four outs was a pickoff after he gave up one of his two walks. The only three balls hit were two groundouts and one pop up — all to second base.

“He had good command of his fastball and his breaking ball. He just threw a lot of strikes. You play good defense when the other team only puts three balls into play,” Flyers coach Greg Bryant said. “And we hit the ball better than Monday.”

St. Joseph (2-0) banged out 10 hits with Blackburn going 3-4. Ryan Schwab was 2-3 and Ryan Waginger 2-4.

The Flyers got all the runs they needed with two outs in the first inning.

Blackburn doubled and Waginger reached on a dropped fly ball. He moved up on a wild pitch and scored when Cory Lewis was safe on an error.

The lead went to 6-0 in the second inning.

Schwab walked with two outs, stole second and came home on a double by Chad Harvey. Blackburn had an RBI single, courtesy runner Joe “The Shoe” Unger stole second, and Waginger had an RBI single.

Lewis walked and, after a double steal, Jerrod Laber was safe on an error as a run scored.

A run scored in the fourth when Blackburn was safe on an error, Waginger singled, Lewis was safe on a fielder’s choice and a throwing error allowed the run to score.

Unger then walked, Tre Stambaugh singled and a wild pickoff throw scored pinch-runner Anthony Whaley and sent Stambaugh to third base. Schwab had an RBI single, Joey Basedow was safe on an error, Blackburn singled, Waginger grounded out as a run scored, and Laber reached on an error as two more runs scored.

The Flyers host Peebles at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and entertain New Boston Thursday at the Ironton Senior League Field.
