Maybe two wrongs do make a right.

The St. Joseph Flyers had a lot of mistakes early, but battled back to win their season opener 6-5 over the Rose Hill (Ky.) Royals Monday.

“It was one of those games where we did everything wrong and we were still able to come back and win. We hung in and kept chipping away,” Flyers coach Greg Bryant said.

The Flyers used a 3-run rally in the sixth inning to give Ryan Waginger the win as he struck out six, walked two and did not allow an earned run. Ryan Schwab worked the seventh inning for the save.

“Ryan wasn’t in a good rhythm early, but he came back and gave us five good innings,” Bryant said.

Rock Hill used three errors, two walks and three hits to score five unearned runs in the first inning.

St. Joseph came back with two in the bottom of the inning when Ryan Schwab was hit by a pitch, Chad Harvey singled and Caleb Blackburn and Waginger grounded out for RBIs.

The Flyers got a run in the second on a walk to Pat Gagai and double by Tre’ Stambaugh.

The 3-run winning rally came in the bottom of the sixth.

Cory Lewis singled, Jerrod Laber walked and Gagai was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Michael Basedow singled home pinch-runner Joe “The Shoe” Unger, Stambaugh walked to force in the tying run and Schwab’s base hit put the Flyers ahead.

Lewis was the only Flyer with two hits.
