Mistakes prove costly for Green
CROWN CITY — When you give the ball away, you usually give away points, too.
Such as it was for the Green Bobcats who turned the ball over three times that led to South Gallia touchdowns and the Rebels came away with a 28-12 win Friday night.
Green (3-3) took the lead on an 18-yard run by Jonathan Butler with 5:56 left in the first quarter to go up 6-0.
South Gallia answered just before the end of the quarter on a 51-yard jaunt by Dewey Cantrell. Derrick Beaver ran for the conversion and the Rebels led 8-6.
The lead went to 14-6 less than two minutes into the second quarter on a 13-yard run by Cantrell.
Green came back with a scoring drive capped by James McGuire’s 4-yard run to cut the deficit to 14-12 with just 53 seconds left.
But the Rebels scored with no time on the clock as John Wells hit Dustin McCombs on a 13-yard pass. Beaver added the conversion to make it 20-12 at the break.
Wells had a 13-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter to add some insurance to the lead and close out the scoring.
Green ran for 222 yards with McGuire picking up 136 yards on 30 carries. Butler added 84 yards on a 14 attempts.
Corey Dyer had three receptions for 33 yards for Green.
Cantrell led South Gallia (5-1) with 101 yards on 11 carries and Beaver got 98 yards on 12 attempts.
