Do good things and good things will happen.

The St. Joseph Flyers did the right things and came away with a 54-49 win over the New Boston Tigers Saturday night.

“The defense played pretty good and we had good clock management. It was a good effort and a good win,” Flyers coach Kevin Hacker said.

Ryan Schwab had a good night as the senior scored a season-high 16 points to go along with a pair of assists. Michael Basedow added 10 points and 6 rebounds while Chad Harvey scored 12 points including six clutch free throws.

But Hacker said the key was playing good defense.

“Clay Crum played good game defensively and there isn’t a night (Ryan) Staton doesn’t comes out and give you everything he’s got,” Hacker said.

With the game tied 6-6 at the end of the first quarter, Basedow and Schwab had 4 points each in the second quarter as St. Joseph (9-7) took a 19-16 halftime lead.

Schwab drained three shots from behind the arc in the third quarter and Harvey added 6 more points as the Flyers extended their lead to 38-31.

“Schwab came out and got some good looks and hit some big shots. He didn’t force anything,” Hacker said.

In the fourth quarter, Harvey scored 6 points — all from the foul line — and Staton added 5 points including 3 of 3 from the line as the Flyers thwarted any New Boston comeback hopes.

Josh Howell scored 16 points and Mike Salisbury 10 to lead New Boston.

The Flyers host Portsmouth East on Tuesday and travel to Huntington (W.Va.) St. Joseph on Friday.
