When is a game not over when it’s over?

That question was answered Tuesday night.

The Symmes Valley Vikings and St. Joseph Flyers went into overtime tied 48-48. But a couple of minutes into overtime, but team’s scorekeepers told officials that regulation ended with Symmes Valley ahead 48-47.

Since the overtime period had already begun, the quarter was completed with the Flyers outscoring the Vikings 5-4, thus making the game 52-52 and forcing a second overtime.

The Vikings then outscored the Flyers 13-10 to win 65-62.

“I’ve never been involved in anything like that before. No one really knew what to do,” Vikings coach Alvin Carpenter.

“But it was a fun game to watch, even while you’re coaching.”

A key for the Vikings was 9 of 10 foul shooting in the extra periods.

“We did what we had to do and that was make free throws,” Carpenter said. “This was a good win. We needed this one.”

The Flyers biggest loss of the night was an injury to Corey Lewis, the team’s leading scorer. Lewis, who is coming off a knee injury, got a steal and slipped with six minutes left in the third quarter and re-injured the knee.

St. Joseph was also missing starting guard Ryan Schwab who did not play due to an illness.

“Our depth really took a hit,” Hacker said. “I’m not really that concerned with the loss, I’m more concerned about Corey. He’s worked so hard to get back and play.”

Michael Humphrey led the Vikings with 31 points, 11 rebounds and 5 steals.

Kirt Shipley added 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Vikings (3-1).

St. Joseph (3-1) had four players in double figures led by Michael Basedow with 17 and Jerrod Laber with 16. Ryan Staton scored 15 and Chad Harvey 11.

St. Joseph took a 12-8 lead at the end of the first quarter as Basedow and Harvey had 4 points each.

The Vikings came back to take a 23-18 lead at the break as Humphrey scored 9 points.

Laber scored 8 points in the third quarter to tie the game at 34-34 and set up the wild finish.

In the second overtime, Humphrey had 8 points including 4 of 4 at the line. Harvey hit a 3-pointer to get the Flyers within 65-62 with five seconds left, but the Vikings were able to run out the clock and secure the win.
