Trimble nips Lady Vikings in sectional title game

ATHENS, OH — Not even Bill Gates had enough money to buy the Symmes Valley Lady Vikings some points.

The Lady Vikings went stone cold from the field — especially in the fourth quarter — as they fell 45-39 to the Trimble Lady Tomcats Saturday in the Division IV sectional finals.

“Our kids played hard and never gave up, but we could not buy a basket, even at the foul line,” Lady Vikings coach Lisa Bryant said.

The Lady Vikings were 15 of 56 from the field for the game for just 26.8 percent and they were 7 of 17 from the line for 41 percent.

“They hit their free throws when it counted,” Bryant said.

Tiffany Bryant had 15 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocked shots for the Lady Vikings while Emily Bowling scored 15 points to go with 8 rebounds.

Tiffany Bryant had 6 points in the first quarter to put the Lady Vikings up 10-8. Bowling scored 5 in the second quarter and it was 19-17 at the half.

Bryant had 7 points and Kayla Saunders 5 in the third quarter to give the Lady Vikings a 3-point lead.

Despite a 34-31 lead heading into the fourth quarter, the Lady Vikings offense couldn’t make a basket and scored just 5 points. Trimble used 11 unanswered points over the final four minutes of the game to rally for the win.

“The wheels just kinda fell off. We had 15 turnovers the entire game and eight in the fourth quarter,” coach Bryant said.

The Trimble bench was able to outscore the Lady Vikings 11-1.

Symmes Valley finished 12-9 and just missed their first sectional title since 1989.

Coach Bryant was disappointed her team lost, but still proud of their performance for the season and seniors Tiffany Bryant, Kayla Saunders and Natasha Pointer.

“I am proud of this team’s accomplishments this year. A lot of people thought this would not be a very good season because we lost seven seniors last year,” coach Bryant said.

“But this is probably the team with the biggest heart I have ever coached. Our kids won some really big games this year and almost got a sectional. I will truly miss all three of (the seniors).”

Kourtney Kinnison led Trimble (10-12) with 14 points.
