NEW BOSTON

— Sometimes Alvin Carpenter worries too much.

Playing Friday against the New Boston Tigers who had won just one game, most people thought this was going to be a tough game, including Carpernter.

But the Vikings erased any doubts as they cruised to a 90-62 Southern Ohio Conference win over New Boston.

“I was worried about this game. We have a big game against Eastern on Tuesday and that would mean a lot to our team to win that one. I didn’t want to look too far ahead,” Vikings coach Alvin Carpenter said.

Symmes Valley is now 9-3 overall and 6-2 in the SOC. Eastern is second in the SOC, one game ahead of the Vikings.

Michael Humphrey had 22 points, 10 rebounds and 3 blocked shots to lead the Vikings. Chris Capper had 16 points and 10 rebounds, Kirt Shipley 16 points, Matt Tibbs 15 and Kirt Shipley 12.

Kyle Meadows pulled down 13 rebounds and blocked 5 shots.

New Boston (1-10, 0-7) was led by Josh Holbrook with 11 points.

Although it was an easy win, Carpenter said it was still nice to win at such a difficult place as New Boston.

“It’s always a good win any time you win in the league and you win on the road. But New Boston always seems to be one of the toughest places in the area to win,” Carpenter said.

Shipley scored 8 of his points in the first quarter as Symmes Valley took a 21-17 lead.

But Tibbs scored 9 points in the second quarter as the Vikings erupted for 34 points and built a 55-28 halftime cushion.

New Boston came back to outscore the Vikings in the third quarter and make it a 65-47 game, but Capper scored 12 points in the fourth quarter including 7 of 9 from the foul line while Tibbs made 4 of 5 free throws as the Vikings continued to pad their lead.
