ROME TOWNSHIP — As the only senior, Megan Auxier made Senior Night something she would remember.

Auxier struck out 15 as she pitched a four-hitter and the Fairland Lady Dragons edged the Ashland Kittens 4-3 in eight innings Monday.

“Megan pitched another good game and it was senior night, so it was quite an emotional game,” said Fairland coach Leroy Baise.

Fairland didn’t let Auxier’s good work go to waste by scoring a run in the eighth inning.

Kirstin Midkiff led off the eighth inning with a hit and went to third following sacrifice bunts by Whitney Boster and Beth Schlegel. Midkiff then scored on a passed ball.

“We played together better as a team. We played softball the way you’re supposed to play. We put pressure on them and Kirstin Midkiff came through with the bat. She came up big tonight,” said Baise.

Fairland broke a scoreless tie with a run in the third inning.

Sara Simms walked, moved to second base when Megan Brooks grounded out, then stole third base and scored when no one covered the base and the throw went into left field.

The lead went to 3-0 in the fifth inning.

Shelby Fuller walked, Simms got a base hit and then Fuller stole third base and scored on a throwing error. Simms went to third base on the play and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mackenzie Rucker.

Ashland tied the game in the sixth inning when Cannoy walked, Smith and Phillips singled, and Short got a two-out bloop hit that scored all three runners.

Fairland (14-7) visits Spring Valley, W.Va., Wednesday.
