CHESAPEAKE — First things first.
By taking care of the first quarter, the Chesapeake Lady Panthers took care of the Ohio Valley Christian Lady Defenders 60-26 Thursday.
Chesapeake used 20 points by Sarah Rucker and a stingy defense to outscore OVC 22-0 in the first quarter.
“The first quarter we really guarded hard. We did what we needed to do in the first quarter to set the tone for the game,” Lady Panthers coach John McClung said.
Rucker scored 12 more points in the second quarter as Chesapeake opened up a 38-5 lead.
She didn’t play in the second half.
Chesapeake, now 7-5, bounced back from a tough league loss to South Point on Wednesday.
“We needed to get back in the swing. Courtney (Heffner) and Allison (Chapman) are coming around and learning the system. They played well tonight for freshmen,” McClung said.
“Holly Black settled down and started knocking down her shots in the second half.”
Lexy Staton had 4 points in the third quarter as Chesapeake took a 50-16 lead. Chapman got 4 points in the fourth quarter as each team scored 10 points.
Rucker also had 12 rebounds to go with her 32 points while Staton had 10 points, 5 assists, 3 steals and 3 blocked shots.
Heffner grabbed 6 rebounds and Black handed out 7 assists.
Kalee Edmonds had 9 points and Rachelle Blankenship scored 8 to lead OVC.
Chesapeake hosts River Valley Monday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
