COAL GROVE — Just when it looked like the Coal Grove Lady Hornets were going in the right direction, the ball didn’t.

Leading by 8 points going into the fourth quarter, the Lady Hornets did not make a field goal as the Lucasville Valley Lady Indians rallied for a 46-43 win Thursday in a non-league game.

“We played pretty decent defense and shot well the first half, but we couldn’t hit anything in the fourth quarter,” Lady Hornets coach Nick Miller said.

Coal Grove took a 14-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. The defense held Valley to single digits in the second quarter while Samantha Hall scored 8 points to put the Lady Hornets up 26-14 at the break.

Chelsea Markins scored 7 points in the third quarter as Coal Grove held an 11-point lead, but Michelle Maines came off the bench to hit a 3-pointer and cut the deficit to 40-32 at the end of the quarter.

Coal Grove’s offense went stone cold in the fourth quarter while Maines hit three more shots from behind the arc to rally the Lady Indians.

“We knew (Mains) could shoot and we made a point to know where she was at, but she just put the ball in the basket,” Miller said.

Markins scored 17 points and

had 5 assists and 2 steals to lead the Lady Hornets (5-3).

Hall had 14 points and 5 rebounds while Brittany Harrison grabbed 7 rebounds.

Courtney Merritt had 15 points to lead Valley (4-6). Maines finished with 12 and Jordan Arbaugh added 11.
