PORTSMOUTH — The Symmes Valley Vikings did some things they didn’t want to do, and they didn’t do some things they needed to do.

Errors and missed scoring opportunities left the Vikings on the wrong end of a 5-4 score with the Portsmouth Clay Panthers Monday in a Southern Ohio Conference game.

“We made too many errors and we couldn’t score when we had runners in scoring position,” Vikings coach John Patterson said.

Errors helped Clay score four times in the first inning.

The Vikings came back to score three runs in the second inning. Brandon Bowling, Kirt Shipley and Gaga Patterson walked and Robbie Powell had a three-run double.

The Panthers got another run in the third inning to take a 5-3 lead.

The Vikings got a run back in the sixth inning when Powell reached on an error, Ethan Wilson had a sacrifice bunt and Cody Bland singled.

But the rally ended a run short and Symmes Valley failed to score in the seventh.

Jeremy Hatfield pitched well in defeat. He struck out eight and walked only one in picking up a complete game.

Symmes Valley (3-6, 2-2) plays at South Gallia Wednesday.
