If this was television, the Ironton Fighting Tigers would be looking at sweeps week.
Ironton got must-win Monday by beating the Gallipolis Blue Devils 4-1 in a Southeastern Ohio Athletic League tennis match.
The Fighting Tigers avenged a loss at Gallipolis last week and put Ironton in position to win the SEOAL if they can sweep the rest of the week’s matches.
Ironton now plays Portsmouth Tuesday and Chillicothe Wednesday for the conference championship.
On Thursday, Ironton faces the North Division’s first-place team Athens.
Lovell Medcalf remained undefeated in 13 matches this season as he swept Joan Sojka by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores.
No. 2 singles player Rob Downs stayed perfect in conference play and went to 11-2 overall as he blanked Mollie Blake 6-0, 6-0.
Ironton’s J.C. Kinney fell to Greg Baker 3-6, 1-6 in singles play.
In doubles, Austin Cornett and Demetrius Givens avenged their only conference loss by beating Quint Nibert and Adam Blake 7-6 (7-5) and 6-2.
Givens is now 9-4 on the season.
Also in doubles play, Ironton’s Seth Christian and Joey Pauley downed Kamal Dayal and Tim Huffman 6-2, 6-4.
In junior varsity play, Ironton’s Lorenzo Akers and Cody Quillen lost 7-8.
