Fighting Tigers tennis team splits matches

FLATWOODS, Ky. — The rain was the only winner in this tennis match.

The Ironton Fighting Tigers dropped a rain-abbreviated match Monday to the Russell Red Devils.

Ironton’s Lovell Medcalf defeated Chris Bates 8-0 and Rob Downs beat Miles Russetter by the same score in singles play, but teammate J.C. Kinney lost 3-8 to Greg Stump.

In doubles play, Ironton’s Austin Corneett and Demetrius Givens fell to Alan Sparkman and Ross Turner 5-8, and Seth Christian and Lorenzo Akers were beaten by Evan White and Paul Spradlin.

The weather was better on Tuesday and so was Ironton as they beat Chillicothes in a Southeastern Ohio Athletic League match.

Medcalf stayed unbeaten this season in 11 matches as he beat Jon Lous 6-0, 6-1.

Downs stopped Tim Unger by identical scores of 6-1, but Akers lost a tough match to Andy Clark, 6-4, 4-6, 3-6.

In doubles play, &uot;Birdman&uot; Cornett and &uot;Big D&uot; Givens beat Luke Watner and Chris Unger 6-1, 6-2 while the Ironton team of Christian and Kinney downed David Axe and Daniel Axe 6-0, 6-0.

Ironton, 8-3 and 4-0 in the SEOAL, plays at Gallipolis Wednesday and then hosts the Blue Devils Thursday in matches to decide the SEOAL South championship.
