The St. Joseph Flyers played like trapped alley cats as they fought past the Symmes Valley Vikings 2-1 Tuesday in a pitcher’s duel.

“It was a good team win. We scratched and clawed,” said Flyers coach Greg Bryant.

“Ryan Waginger did a good job getting out of bases-loaded jam with only one run scoring. And Jerrod Laber made a nice play in the top of the seventh.”

Waginger pitched a 5-hitter to get the win. He struck out four, walked just one and the only run was unearned.

Kyle Meadows pitched well in defeat as he gave up seven hits, struck out six and only walked one.

The game was scoreless until the Vikings got their lone run with two outs in the fourth inning.

Cody Bland reached on an error, Jeremy Hatfield was hit by a pitch and Kirt Shipley singled to load the bases. Gage Patterson followed with a base hit to score Bland.

The Flyers scratched out a run to tie the game in the sixth.

Ryan Schwab had a leadoff single and took second on a balk. He went to third on a fly out and Waginger reached on an error to score Schwab.

“Schwab made a real heady play to get in scoring position and Waginger did a good job putting the ball in play,” Bryant said.

The winning run came in the bottom of the seventh.

Laber had a leadoff single and Michael Basedow singled an out later. After another balk, Tre Stambaugh hit a slow grounder to second base and Laber beat the throw home.

‘The ball just squirted through the right spot and it was slow enough for Laber to score,” Bryant said.

St. Joseph (4-0) plays at North Adams Wednesday. The Vikings are 3-4.
