There will be plenty of time to vacation this summer. For now, the St. Joseph Flyers would rather go to work every day.

With the weather keeping the Flyers from playing, they welcomed the chance to play Monday as they rolled past the South Gallia Rebels 14-1 in five innings.

“We got to play and we played pretty well in all facets of the game. We seem to be getting better each time out,” said Flyers coach Greg Bryant.

Ryan Waginger was masterful as he went the first four innings to get the win. He struck out two, walked one and allowed just four hits.

“Ryan threw well. He only threw 60 pitches, but we had a big lead and it allowed us to rest him and get some of the other kids in the game and they stepped up. Dillon Klein had a big hit,” said Bryant.

St. Joseph jump all over the Rebels to start the game with five runs in the first inning.

Ryan Schwab singled, Michael Basedow had a bunt single, and a throwing error put runners on the corners.

Cory Lewis doubled for a run, Caleb Blackburn got an RBI single, Jerrod Laber walked, and Waginger had a run-scoring single.

Chad Harvey was hit by a pitch that scored Blackburn and Tre Stambaugh grounded out as a run scored.

The Flyers got two more runs in the second inning thanks to three South Gallia errors.

Basedow was safe on an error and stole second. Blackburn reached on an error and also stole second. Laber was safe on another error as both runners scored.

Two more runs scored in the third inning.

Stambaugh singled, Pat Gagai doubled and Schwab and Basedow hit a sacrifice flies to make it 9-0.

St. Joseph had another five-run rally in the fourth inning and it was 14-0.

Joe “The Shoe” Unger was safe on an error, Schwab singled, and Reid Smith walked to load the bases. Dylan Klein singled for two runs and Blackburn capped the rally as he slammed a three-run homer.

The Rebels avoided the shutout on three straight singles by Brody Green, Travis McCarty and John Wells.

Schwab was 2-3 and Blackburn and Waginger 2-4 as the Flyers banged out 11 hits.

St. Joseph (7-1) plays at Tolsia, W.Va., Wednesday.
