The Chesapeake Panthers had their own idea of a grand opening.

Chesapeake opened Thursday’s game with a couple of grand slam home runs in the first two innings by Jaran Bartoe and Josh Blair and went on to beat the St. Joseph Flyers 13-4.

“We tried to bring back Caleb (Blackburn) on two -days rest and he had a sore arm, and once Chesapeake started hitting they just didn’t stop,” said Flyers coach Greg Bryant.

The Flyers answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning as Pat Gagai, Jerrod Laber, Caleb Blackburn and Cory Lewis all singled.

But Chesapeake scored four more in the top of the second inning.

Bryon Huff and Rase singled, Harris walked and Bartoe hit a grand slam.

The Panthers scored two in the third inning.

Baise walked, Huff reached on a fielder’s choice and Rase hit a two-run homer.

Chesapeake’s lead went to 13-2 in the top of the fifth.

Rase singled, moved up on a wild pitch, took third on a hit by Harris, and scored when Bartoe hit into a fielder’s choice.

St. Joseph got two runs in the bottom of the inning.
