Huntswomen top Redwomen, 7-0
RIO GRANDE — It wasn’t a science fiction movie, but strange things were happening.
The Rock Hill Redwomen had five errors in a 7-0 loss to the Huntington Ross Huntsmen Thursday in the Division III district semifinals at the University of Rio Grande.
“We didn’t play well. Things happened tonight that haven’t happened all year,” said Redwomen coach Mary Harper.
Rock Hill’s defense not only broke down with five errors, but the offense managed just a base hit by Jazel DeAutremont in the seventh inning.
Stephanie Wright got the win for the Huntswomen. She struck out six and did not walk a batter.
“Wright had some movement on her ball and a nice change, but it was nothing we haven’t seen. We just hit the ball right at people,” coach Harper said.
Bobbi Harper was saddled with the loss. She allowed eight hits, struck out nine and gave up just two walks.
Ross got the only run it needed in the first inning.
After hit batsman, Courtney Dutton singled and Janea Crockrell grounded out as the run scored.
The Huntswomen got four more runs in the third inning.
Stephanie Wright reached on an error, Dutton hit into a fielder’s choice and Ashly Dearth tripled in the run.
Crockrell doubled for an RBI, Lisa Doverstyn singled in a run, Bridget Neighbors was safe on a fielder’s choice and another error scored a run.
The final two runs scored in the seventh inning.
Crockrell was safe on an error, stole second and third, and Neighbors had an RBI bunt single. Ashleah Blair’s base hit drove in the final run.
Rock Hill finishes the best season in school history with an impressive 20-1 record, its first Ohio Valley Conference championship, and third sectional title in four seasons.
“It was a good season,” coach Harper said. “Huntington was a good team. They were fundamentally sound all around. They were ready to play.”
