AID — The pitcher’s duel was decided by the defense.

Green’s Ali Thompson and Symmes Valley’s Libby Ash were locked up in a scoreless game, but a series of errors enabled Green to beat the Lady Vikings 4-0 Monday in a Southern Ohio Conference game.

Thompson struck out 14 and did not walk a batter to get the win. Ash fanned 11 and didn’t walk anyone in suffering the tough loss.

“It was a good ball game. Both pitchers threw well. They both changed things up and kept the batters off-balance,” said Lady Vikings coach Jeff “Odie” Estep.

“We just had the one bad inning. Other than that, both teams played well.”

Green didn’t have a baserunner until the fourth inning when they scored three runs with the help of three Symmes Valley errors.

Thompson and Cassidy Skaggs singled but an error on the play put runners at second and third. Abbey Barrett reached on an error to score a run and Elista Hall’s fly ball was misplayed for an error as two more runs scored.

In Green’s fifth inning, Amanda Avery singled with two outs, moved up on a passed ball and scored on Thompson’s base hit.

Thompson was 3-4 and Hall 2-3 as Green remained unbeaten in 10 games.

Symmes Valley loaded the bases in the sixth with no outs but failed to score.

Emily Bowling and Kayla Justice each went 2-3 for the Lady Vikings.

Symmes Valley (4-7, 4-3) plays at Ironton Tuesday.
