AID — If hitting is a disease, the Symmes Valley Lady Vikings hope they can’t find a cure.
The Lady Vikings used a big third inning to beat the Portsmouth Notre Dame Lady Titans 12-1 in five innings Monday in a Southern Ohio Conference game.
“We really hit the ball well and Erica Corn did a nice job on the mound,” said Lady Vikings coach Jeff “Odie” Estep.
“Hitting is contagious. Once we got on a roll in the third inning, we didn’t quit.”
Latasha Hatfield went 3-4 and Natasha Pointer 2-3 to lead a 9-hit Symmes Valley attack.
The Lady Vikings got a run in the first inning when Latasha Hatfield singled, stole second base, took third base on a wild pitch and came home on a sacrifice fly by Chelsea Wall.
After Notre Dame got a run in the second inning to tie the game, Symmes Valley scored nine runs in the third inning.
Natasha Pointer and Hatfield singled, Kayla Justice walked and a wild pitch scored the first run.
Wall was hit by a pitch, Emily Bowling walked to force in a run, Courtney Nelson reached on an error for a run, and Erica Corn singled home another run.
Hailey Pelletier walked to drive in a run, Hatfield had a three-run triple and Justice followed with an RBI single.
The final two runs scored in the fourth inning.
Bowling walked, moved up on a wild pitch, and, after Nelson walked, Corn hit into a fielder’s choice for a run. Pelletier singled to drive in Nelson with the final run.
In a tournament at Dover on Saturday, Gahanna beat Symmes Valley 11-0 as the Lady Vikings were guilty of eight errors. The Lady Vikings lost the second game 2-0 to Dover.
Symmes Valley (10-10, 8-4) hosts Beaver Eastern Tuesday.
