Medcalf advances to district tourney

PORTSMOUTH — It was a long day, but it means another day.

Ironton Fighting Tigers No. 1 singles player Lovell Medcalf had five matches in the Division II sectional tennis tournament Wednesday, but winning four of those matches puts him in the district tournament.

Medcalf beat Cody Daniel of Hillsboro, Alex Provaznik of Wheelersburg, Danial Huang of Athens and Tyler Adams of Wheelersburg before falling 3-6, 3-6 to Chad Pieron of Wheelersburg.

It was Medcalf’s first loss this season against 21 wins.

Ironton’s No. 2 singles player Robbie Downs advanced to the elite eight. Downs beat Justin Merle of Circleville and Taka Endo of Washington Court House only to fall to Sam Milner of Athens.

Matt Jones, playing as the No. 3 Ironton singles man, beat Travis Perry of Portsmouth West 6-4, 6-3 but lost 0-6, 0-6 to Tyler Adams of Wheelersburg.

Ironton’s top doubles team of Austin Cornett and Demetrius Givens just missed advancing to the district.

The duo beat Boldman and Jones of Lucasville Valley 7-5, 6-2, Darby and Seth of New Boston 6-0, 6-3, and MacDonald and Miller of Wheelersburg 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 before losing to Vranacar and Lewis of Unioto 2-6, 3-6.

No. 2 team Seth Christian and Joey Pauley beat Montovan and Harris of Portsmouth Notre Dame 6-4, 6-0 and Throckmorton and Tatum of Portsmouth 6-4, 6-2, then lost by identical 0- scores to Yates and Adkins of Lucasville Valley.

The district tournament is Friday and Saturday, May 18-19, in Columbus.
