Murnahan, DePriest key Redmen sweep of River Valley in OVC

PEDRO – Those aren’t batting gloves J.C. Murnahan is wearing. They’re oven mitts.

Murnahan might need the extra protection with the extra hot bat he’s swinging. He just missed hitting for the cycle Monday as the Rock Hill Redmen finished a suspended game with a 15-4 rout of River Valley, then blanked the Raiders in the regularly scheduled game 14-0.

Murnahan singled, tripled and belted a two-run homer in a five-run first inning as the Redmen banged out 12 hits in winning the second game.

Murnahan also had a hit in the suspended game on the heels of a game-winning home run Saturday when he went 3-5.

Pitcher Mark DePriest got the win in both games. He finished up the final four innings of the first game and hurled the five-inning second game.

“He threw well, I think he threw a total of 90 pitches,” said Redmen coach Barry Litteral.

“J.C. hit the ball well, but we had a lot of guys who swung the bat.”

In the first game, River Valley led 2-1 after two innings, but Rock Hill erupted for seven runs in the fourth inning to take an 8-2 lead.

Carl Blankenship, Zach Zornes and DePriest all singled for a run. Drew Kuehne was safe on a fielder’s choice and Nathan Davenport and Corey Burke followed with RBI singles.

An error scored another run and Blankenship capped the rally with a two-run single.

Zornes belted a 3-run homer in the sixth inning to make it 12-4.

DePriest doubled home two runs in a three-run seventh inning to cap the scoring.

Murnahan and Kuehne both went 3-3 while Burke and Guy were 2-3 in the second game.

The Redmen played in the Portsmouth Notre Dame Classic on Saturday. They beat Zanesville Rosecrans 4-3 in 12 innings when Murnahan homered with one out.

Murnahan got the win in relief of David Turley who turned in eight strong innings. He fanned eight and did not walked a batter.

In the second game, Notre Dame won 6-3.

Rock Hill (8-5, 5-3) entertains Coal Grove Wednesday.
