PEDRO – The Rock Hill Redmen wanted to quiet the two players who made the most noise.

Rock Hill’s defense targeted Chesapeake’s Mike Stapleton and Kyle Rase and managed to keep the noise at at a miniumum as the Redmen rolled past the Panthers 72-41 Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

Redmen coach Adam Simpson credited the defensive play of Nathan Davenport and Mike Ison.

“We felt we had to keep Stapleton and Rase in check. Stapleton had 19, but only 6 in the first half. I thought Nate did a nice job on him and Mike Ison did a nice job on Kyle Rase,” Simpson said.

“And we had guys like Matt Matney who had to go out and guard on the perimeter. We wanted to contest shots because their offense was on the outside. We wanted to keep them out of the middle and we did.”

The Panthers not only lost the game, but lost their coach as well. Following the game, first-year head coach Ron Reed gave a verbal resignation to Chesapeake superintendent Sam Hall.

The Panthers are now 2-6 and 0-3 in the OVC.

Davenport had 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Redmen. Matney added 11 points, Mark DePriest 10 points and 4 assists, and Aaron Butler 10. Andrew Stumbo had 7 rebounds and Ison 5 steals.

Stapleton led all scorers with 19 points and Rase added 9.

Davenport scored 6 points and Matney had 7 points including a 30-footer at the buzzer to put the Redmen up 20-8 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Davenport and DePriest combined for 10 points and it was 36-18 at the break.

Ison and Stumbo scored 5 each and Butler 4 as Rock Hill opened up a 58-26 lead at the end of the third quarter. Stapleton scored all 8 of Chesapeake’s points.

Tyler Kirkpatrick and Wes Pierson had 3 points each in the fourth quarter as Simpson emptied his bench.

“Eli Kitchen and Dustin Chandler did some nice things coming in the fourth quarter off the bench,” Simpson said.
